Indonesian Flag Raised in Yellowknife City Hall, Northwest Territories
Warm and open hearted, those are the impression felt during the meeting of Indonesian Consul General with several high ranking officials of Northwest Territories (NWT), during the course of official visit to Yellowknife, 19-20 April 2016. Some of the high ranking officials ranging from the Premier, Commissioner, Parliament Member, Yellowknife Mayor, Commander of Joint Task Force North and Chief of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) NWT in separate occasion welcomed the visit of Consul General who are accompanied by Consul of Economic and Consul of Information section.
The visit to several high officials was also a window of opportunity to introduce Indonesia’s potential and reiterated the message from Indonesian Government to Canadian counterparts for a closer cooperation in many sectors. Further, Consul General also extended the invitation to high ranking officials to visit Indonesia for business as well as tourism activities. One of the high profile event in Jakarta, that was raised during the meeting, is the upcoming Trade Expo Indonesia 2016. During the discussions, the officials were enthusiast to hear the progress potentials for future cooperation between Yellowknife and Indonesia. As a courtesy for Consul General’s visit, Indonesian national flag was raised for two days at Yellowknife City Hall.
NWT is one of the northern most territory that has abundance of natural resources, in particular oil, gas, gold and minerals. The discovery of diamond in 1991 in several parts of NWT made the territory the third biggest diamond producer in the world. The other potential that is valuable for its economy is “Northern Light” or “Aurora Borealis”, the images of lights in night sky, not only because it’s beautiful but it is exceptional and exclusive to certain region.
While in Yellowknife, Consul General also had the opportunity to meet with Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Agency and Trade, Investment Board. The fruitful and productive meeting achieved during the visit is potential to further enhance cooperation that will bring mutual benefit between Indonesia and NWT.
