Celebration of ASEAN Festival 2016 in Vancouver

For second consecutive times, ASEAN Festival had won the attention of Vancouver residents through the performance of art, culture and culinary hosted collectively by the Consulate General of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, known as ASEAN Consulates General in Vancouver (ACGV). The festival held on August 27, 2016 at Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, Vancouver, drawn the attention of around 800 visitors ranging from local officials, consular corps, business people and local community.     

The opening ceremony was made official by the attendance of Hon. Marc Dalton, Member of Legislative Assembly for Maple Ridge-Mission dan Councillor Raymond LouieActing Mayor of Vancouver as Guest of Honors. Both officials in their remarks, gave high praise and welcomed the initiative of ASEAN community in Vancouver that reflected the diversity of culture and community in Vancouver.   

During the course of festival, the audiences appeared to enjoy the stage performance that featured various traditional dances and musical performances from ASEAN Consulates General in Vancouver. Indonesian Consulate involved the participation of Indonesian restaurant, business community and Indonesian students. This year’s festival, Indonesia promoted signature dishes such as nasi kuning, balinese chicken, rendang, and ice cendol (refreshment drink).       

On the other corner of the festival, Indonesia also displayed food products that featured snacks, instant noodle, various textile products including batik from several regions of Indonesia and jewellery accessories.

In term of on stage performance, Indonesia displayed Piring and Renggong Manis Dance performed by groups of students under supervision of Indonesian Consulate and angklung performance by students of Trinity College, Langley. Fashion show also made its debut by featuring traditional dresses from several regions in Indonesia, performed by the lady spouses of Indonesian Consulate.

Similar to last year’s event, Indonesian Consulate became the country coordinator for ASEAN Festival 2016. The festival that also served as the concluding event to commemorate 49 years the establishment of ASEAN and marked the final chapter of ASEAN activities during 2016. Previously ASEAN Consulates General in Vancouver made series of activities such as ASEAN Bowling Competition, ASEAN Charity Golf Tournament, official visit to several mayors in Metro Vancouver and ASEAN Family Day.
